MRC Free Speech America Vice President Dan Schneider hammered Google for ensuring that users wade through negative coverage of former President Donald Trump before they could visit his campaign website.

Schneider exposed Google’s flagrant bias during a conversation with Fox Business host David Asman on the Wednesday edition of The Evening Edit. “Google has been burying Trump’s campaign website for well over a year—you couldn’t even find it,” Schneider said, pointing out how easy it was to find the websites of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during the same period.

He went on to describe Google’s new type of election interference: “But Google has changed things up a little bit. You can at least find Donald Trump's campaign website and maybe it’s the sixth search result but it's only after Google has flooded the field above his campaign website with links to horrible, very biased news.”

MRC searched for “donald trump presidential race 2024,” but Google did not put Trump’s campaign website at the top of the results. Instead, Google placed a number of articles from publications hostile to the former president such as The New York Times, Politico and Jeff Bezos’s The Washington Post before the campaign website. Trump’s campaign website appeared as the sixth result.

Schneider reminded Asman that these were leftist websites, highlighting that ABC News was “100% for Kamala Harris and Google is highlighting these outlets above Donald Trump's campaign website.” Schneider explained that voters simply trying to learn something about Trump would necessarily have to see “these terrible news stories” before getting to hear from the former president himself.

Asman agreed that Google was biased, arguing that Google also buries any content that isn’t woke in its search results for topics like diversity equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) or climate change.

Google has consistently buried Trump’s campaign website, several MRC studies have noted.

Before Google began to make users run the gauntlet of negative coverage to see Trump’s campaign website, the search engine frequently buried the former president so far down that his campaign website did not appear on the first page of results. Google did this during the Republican National Convention, ahead of a presidential debate with Biden and at other times when Trump was in the news.
