In what could be considered a November surprise, Star Wars and Indiana Jones star actor Harrison Ford suggested Vice President Kamala Harris would protect Americans’ free speech liberties.
Ford’s wild praise for Harris as a free speech advocate is shocking considering that she has repeatedly called for censorship and “oversight” of Big Tech companies that do not crack down on free speech enough. Ford’s shocking comments on speech came alongside his endorsement of Harris ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Harris has routinely positioned herself in opposition to free speech, instead championing broad attacks against Americans for expressing their beliefs.
A clip shared on The Hollywood Reporter’s X page on Saturday was a head-scratcher, as Ford claimed that “Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her about policies or ideas, and then, as we have done for centuries, we'll debate them.”
Ford’s comments quickly drew criticism, with one user on X commenting, “These celebrities are seriously disconnected from reality.”
Undoubtedly, Ford is out of touch with Harris’s policies and past comments, as she has repeatedly outed herself as an opponent to free speech. The Media Research Center has revealed Harris’s anti-free speech past in multiple reports, including a recent study titled, “MRC REVEALS Seven Anti-Free Speech Presidential Nominees Since 2020 Election Cycle.” The study provided ample evidence of Harris’s unfavorable stance toward free speech rights.
In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper in 2019, Harris lamented that social media companies “are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of…oversight or regulation, and that has to stop.”
On multiple occasions, Harris has also advocated for the censorship of her political rival directly.
While running for president during the 2020 primary season, Harris called for Jack Dorsey to censor former President Donald Trump on the platform, saying, “I believe the President’s recent tweets rise to the level that Twitter should consider suspending his account…the stakes are too high to do nothing.” Moreover, In 2019, she tweeted, “Look let's be honest, @realDonaldTrump's Twitter account should be suspended.”
It appears that Ford may not be endorsing the same Harris that Americans have come to know. At an NAACP dinner in Michigan in 2019, Harris advocated for social media platforms to have content moderation—that is, censorship—stating that “if you don’t police your platforms, we are going to hold you accountable as a community.”
