First Lady Melania Trump’s announcement of a new artificial intelligence challenge underscores the urgency for Big Tech companies to overhaul their systems amid growing evidence of censorship and bias.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Trump urged students nationwide to “unleash their imagination and showcase the spirit of American innovation” by participating in the competition.
“In just a few short years, artificial intelligence will be the engine driving every business sector across our economy,” she said. “It is important America leads the rest of the world.”
The challenge will allow students to complete AI projects aimed at solving community challenges, while educators will focus on how AI could improve K-12 education.
The challenge is part of the White House’s 250th anniversary celebration. Its focus on AI underscores an undeniable reality: the technology is here to stay. Yet, as the Media Research Center has documented, AI poses serious challenges.
Studies of AI answers on pressing political and cultural issues have consistently shown that these AI systems are biased in favor of the political left.
One MRC study found that Meta AI, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and even xAI’s Grok condemned Trump as a bad president while offering nuanced answers about dictators Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin.
On the subject of patriotism, Google’s Gemini has consistently exposed its bias. Most recently, an MRC study unveiled that Gemini ranted against Independence Day, claiming the holiday and the Pledge of Allegiance are offensive. It also refused to say Americans should celebrate July 4th and conflated America’s founding in 1776 with 1619, the year the first slaves arrived in Virginia. Gemini issued similar answers in 2024.
Meanwhile, China’s DeepSeek operates freely in the U.S. while censoring negative information about the Chinese Communist Party.
Microsoft’s Copilot and DeepSeek both backed an abortion-related injunction when prompted by MRC researchers. Meta AI went further, proudly siding with Planned Parenthood after a Supreme Court ruling.
