Exclusive: Apple News is choosing winners and losers even amongst leftist news outlets, pushing stories from The Washington Post while ignoring The New York Times.

Apple News highlighted Washington Post articles no fewer than 34 times in its top 20 daily morning news stories, while not selecting a single New York Times article so far since the first Monday of this month, according to an analysis by the Media Research Center.

Apple News curated stories from The Post on a broad range of subjects so far in November, including the government shutdown, rising tensions in Venezuela and the 2025 election results. However, the Big Tech news aggregator did not turn to The Times even once in its top morning results over the same time period, MRC found.

It is unclear why Apple News appears to favor The Post. Media bias ratings firm AllSides rates both newspapers as “lean left.” However, The Times website had over six times the readership of The Post in October 2025, according to The Press Gazette.

In September 2025, Apple struck a deal with The Post to include its reporting in the Apple News+ subscription service that costs $9.99 per month. Both The Times and The Post had failed to come to acceptable terms with Apple in 2019.

Even The Wall Street Journal, considered as “center” by Allsides, received more preferential treatment than The Times. At least 24 stories by The Journal were featured on Apple News so far in November.

Only one article was featured from a “lean right” outlet since the first Monday of this month. The single piece, from the UK’s The Telegraph, did not feature American politics but instead focused on the genocide in Sudan.

Apple News has not featured the New York Post, a leading U.S.-based right-leaning media outlet that competes with The Times and The Washington Post among top headlines so far in November.

News aggregators curate articles from various sources to create a news feed that includes a wide range of outlets, providing the appearance of a more balanced look at the news.

Methodology: During the weeks of Nov. 3 - 17, 2025, MRC researchers examined the top 20 news stories featured on Apple News each day at approximately 10:00 AM. Researchers then used the AllSides media bias ratings, which categorize an outlet as “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right” and “right” to determine the overall bias presented by Apple News and calculate the results.
