It may be a new year, but Twitter is still up to the same old tricks.
Twitter never took a holiday break when it came to labeling President Donald Trump’s tweets and the tweets of his campaign, @TeamTrump. In the past seven days, 42 labels have been slapped on tweets referencing elections, Georgia and any mention of fraud. Meanwhile, former Vice President Joe Biden’s account and his campaign’s account have been left untouched by Twitter. President Trump and his campaign have been censored a grand total of 625 times since May 31, 2018.
For this particular message to be censored implies that Twitter has a double standard. Myriads of celebrities and figures have tweeted that Trump was not their president, from actress Patricia Arquette, liberal pundit Kurt Eichenwald and HuffPost blogger Bryan Behar (who tweeted in August that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was still his president.)
Levin announced on Dec. 28 that he was leaving Facebook because of the platform’s censorship. However, he stated that Twitter had yet to censor any of his posts or interfere with his reach. It would seem as if Twitter has broken that streak by censoring Levin’s videos on its platform, based on the label slapped on two of Levin’s videos in the past week. The two tweets were prominently featured on Trump’s Twitter feed.
Twitter announced in an Oct. 9 blog: “Tweets with labels are already de-amplified through our own recommendation systems and these new prompts will give individuals more context on labeled Tweets so they can make more informed decisions on whether or not they want to amplify them to their followers.” The company also stated that users who choose to retweet labeled tweets would receive a prompt “pointing them to credible information.”
