Yahoo News throws a bone to right-leaning media outlets every so often, but balance on the site is a joke when the digital gatekeeper did not show a single right-leaning outlet in its top 20 stories of its morning edition 16 times in January.
While Yahoo News appears to create the veneer of promoting news and entertainment articles from across the political spectrum, MRC researchers found that throughout January the news website buried Fox News and the New York Post—the only two right-leaning outlets promoted in the top 20 of Yahoo News’s morning editions in January. When Yahoo News did include a right-leaning media source, which in every instance but one was Fox News, it primarily featured human-interest headlines. Is Yahoo News aiming for an appearance of balanced news while overwhelmingly prioritizing leftist outlets?
“There’s a consistent, unmistakable pattern showing how Yahoo News buries right-leaning media while simultaneously creating a talking point to claim otherwise. I suspect Yahoo News is already making plans for how to respond to Jim Jordan if the House Judiciary Committee holds another oversight hearing on Big Tech censorship,” said MRC Vice President for Free Speech Dan Schneider. “The evidence is clear, however, Google, Apple, Meta and Yahoo can no longer hide behind Joe Biden's threats. This time they all will have to explain themselves.”
MRC researchers found that for 16 days in the month of January, Yahoo News did not include any articles from right-leaning outlets in its top 20 stories of its morning editions. During the rest of the month, Yahoo News engaged in an apparent shell game, relegating right-leaning outlet articles to the very bottom of its top 20 articles, with few exceptions.
Yahoo News placed right-leaning outlets in the top 10 articles on only two days of the month. One article was from Fox News on Jan. 9, and the other was from the New York Post headlined, “Public speaking expert reveals 2 FBI interrogation tactics to stop anyone from interrupting you” on Jan. 14.
Yahoo News did include articles from right-leaning outlets beneath a deluge of left-leaning sludge, often stacking Fox News articles directly after the top 20 stories in its morning editions.
When the news aggregator did feature right-leaning sources, Yahoo News also frequently selected human interest, crime or foreign policy headlines while reserving bombshell political and breaking news headlines for leftist sources higher up on the page. For instance, the Fox News article Yahoo News promoted on Jan. 9 was headlined: “550-pound bear finally evicted from California home after bizarre strategy ends monthlong ordeal.” The top two articles on that same day came from left-leaning TIME and “center”-labeled Reuters, both of which dealt with government issues. TIME covered the Trump administration’s threat of imminent strikes on drug cartels, and Reuters covered NASA recalling astronauts due to a “serious medical condition,” which it labeled the “first such emergency return in the orbiting laboratory’s 25-year history.” The Fox article about the bear was the only right-leaning article in the entire top 20 that morning, illustrating Yahoo News’s apparent bias.
On Jan. 31, Yahoo News featured a Fox News story headlined, “Utah doomsday mom arrested abroad after allegedly abducting four kids, dumping them in European orphanage.” The crime story was the only article from a right-leaning outlet that Yahoo News featured in its top 20 stories that day and it came in at number 20.
On Jan. 3, Yahoo News included a foreign policy Fox News story on Maduro’s ouster and potential successor in Venezuela. Above that Fox News article on the site, Yahoo News promoted 12 left-leaning articles, with one story each from radical leftist outlets Salon and The New Republic among them.
On Jan. 21, one of only two Fox News articles in Apple News’s top 20 was on sharks, headlined: “Massive great white shark returns to Florida waters after epic year-long Atlantic journey.” The article appeared in the bottom spot of the top 20. The other Fox News article actually did address domestic politics, but both were buried beneath 13 left-leaning articles. The top two articles of the day attempted to paint President Donald Trump in a bad light with CNN coloring Trump’s actions on Greenland as requiring “intervention” and Yahoo News suggesting that Trump is unfit for office, respectively.
Methodology: During the time period Jan. 1 - Jan. 11, 2026, MRC researchers examined the top 20 AllSides-rated news stories featured on Yahoo News each day at approximately 10:00 AM ET and the top 20 AllSides-rated news stories between Jan. 12 - Jan. 31, 2026 at approximately 8:30 AM ET. MRC researchers used the AllSides media bias ratings, which categorize an outlet as “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right” or “right” to determine the overall bias presented by Yahoo News and analyzed the results.
