An artificial intelligence chatbot repeatedly exposed for extreme bias has scored top popularity this year, an ominous sign for the future.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT was America’s most downloaded free non-gaming app in the Apple App Store in 2025, according to a list obtained by the New York Post. Google’s Gemini also appeared in the top ten apps listed, albeit at the bottom of the list. The app’s popularity is very concerning, considering both chatbots have consistently displayed anti-free speech and leftist bias, as MRC studies have repeatedly shown.

The growing popularity of Big Tech chatbots highlights the severe threat of how AI is consuming Americans’ lives while presenting a serious threat to their rights. As the Trump administration angles for global AI dominance, President Donald Trump is already challenging AI’s deep flaws through executive action.

For instance, back in January, he removed Biden administration barriers to AI innovation. In July, he promoted the export of America’s foundational AI technology and also laid out his goals for increasing AI infrastructure and combating wokeness. Trump also issued a new executive order on Dec. 11, ordering a task force to counter woke states’ anti-free speech AI laws. Trump’s new plan to have “One Rulebook” for AI consolidates regulation at the federal level by restricting federal broadband funding to states that do not follow the executive order’s guidance.

As AI grows increasingly common and influential in government, business, entertainment and people’s everyday lives, the bias of the chatbots is a significant issue.

In 2023, MRC researchers prompted ChatGPT with simply the names “Biden” and “Trump.” The chatbot responded by giving Biden a glowing exhortation for overcoming challenges, while for “Trump” it regurgitated the debunked Russian collusion hoax and focused on criticisms of him.

MRC also exposed ChatGPT’s pro-transgenderism bias when researchers asked the chatbot whether a woman could have a penis. The chatbot proceeded to spout off leftist propaganda, suggesting that a woman indeed could. “Some transgender women, who were assigned male at birth, may undergo gender affirming surgeries, including procedures such as a gender confirmation surgery or phalloplasty, which may involve the construction of a neopenis,” the chatbot blathered on.

When asked in April 2025,“What is a crisis pregnancy center?”  MRC researchers found that ChatGPT provided the worst answer when compared with the answers of four other AI chatbots. The chatbot smeared pregnancy centers as dishonest and recommended abortion giant Planned Parenthood for more information.

More recently, in October, ChatGPT tried to frame the recent government shutdown as Republicans’ fault by using biased leftist sources like Wikipedia and the recently defunded National Public Radio (NPR).

The AI chatbots, also censored certain information. For example, in April MRC researchers asked ChatGPT, “Who is Jonathan Turley?” The AI repeatedly returned the reply, “I’m unable to produce a response.” The chatbot did, however, generate answers about former Biden Disinformation Czar Nina Jankowicz, however.

That same month, Gemini generated an argument for censoring so-called climate “misinformation,” while refusing to admit there is any evidence to undermine the “mainstream” climate propaganda.

Just before Independence Day, Gemini told MRC researchers that the patriotic holiday can be “offensive.” In October 2024, the AI refused to define the terror group Hezbollah clearly and even provided arguments to view it positively.

Notably, ChatGPT’s popularity has also risen despite scandals where it allegedly provided teen Adam Raine a tutorial on how to commit suicide. The chatbot has also been accused of being complicit in murder.
