New data shows that support for the constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to free speech is still increasing among Americans.

The National Speech Index found that over 56 percent of Americans reject the claim that the “First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees.” The October 2025 data is particularly encouraging as it follows the assassination of free speech warrior Charlie Kirk, and a struggle between the Trump administration and foreign governments over opposing views of free speech rights.

The Free Speech Alliance and other free speech advocates have worked to bring Americans’ attention to the national and international free speech crisis. MRC Free Speech America, the organizer of the Free Speech Alliance, exposed the vast scope of the Joe Biden administration’s censorship initiatives, documented additional social media censorship, published in-depth studies, worked with the Trump administration to support free speech and exposed Big Tech and government censors. MRC has documented over 8,600 censorship cases in its unique CensorTrack database.

In reaction to the data, MRC Vice President for Free Speech Dan Schneider said, “A free country will soon see its last day if free speech rights are infringed. This fundamental right has historically been supported by both parties, but radicals have marked it for death. There should be no debate about whether the First Amendment is worth preserving, but the sad reality is that there is now a civil war over speech rights. This is a fight we cannot afford to lose or abandon.”

One of Trump’s campaign promises was restoring free speech after four years of the Biden administration’s “whole of society” approach to censorship, and that message resonated with voters. Since day one, the Trump administration has moved to protect First Amendment rights, and that seems to be driving a surge of support for free speech.

The National Speech Index October data marks a positive rise from April, when just over 50 percent of Americans said the First Amendment is not overly broad. Notably, new October data shows that 74 percent of Americans are worried that the state of free speech is not heading in the right direction, but many more Americans strongly believe leftist calls to violence are more a threat than Trumpian slogans such as “make America great again.” Thus, it seems Americans increasingly and rightly identify leftism as a censorship threat.
