Vice President JD Vance dismantled media propaganda that accused the Trump administration of attacking free speech when it was truly the Biden administration that fixated on censorship.

Speaking in North Carolina on Wednesday, Vance debunked the media’s false accusations that ABC News host Jimmy Kimmel’s brief suspension resulted from pressure from the Trump administration, rather than viewer backlash. Instead, Vance called out the “real government censorship” by the Biden administration in light of Google’s admission to the House Judiciary Committee this week that it engaged in biased and unjustified censorship. Indeed, MRC identified 57 Biden censorship initiatives.

“What is the government action that the Trump Administration has engaged in to kick Jimmy Kimmel or anybody else off the air? Zero,” Vance said. “What government pressure have we brought to bear to tell people that they’re not allowed to speak their mind? Zero. We believe in free speech in the Trump administration. We are fighting every single day to protect it.”

The vice president added, “Now compare that to the Biden Administration, where we found out just yesterday that conservatives on YouTube and on a number of social media platforms were being censored. Why? Because the Biden administration picked up the phone and said, ‘We want you to censor our political opponents.’ That is real government censorship. And it left the White House when Joe Biden left the White House.”

Kimmel was suspended after he claimed that the “MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

This remark prompted Nexstar and Sinclair—the owners of multiple ABC affiliate stations— to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! Disney, ABC’s parent company, followed by very briefly suspending Kimmel himself. Federal Communications Commission Brendan Carr then praised the affiliates on X, leading to hysterical accusations that the Trump administration forced ABC’s hand.

This was not an anti-First Amendment action, Vance clarified. Noting that Nexstar and Sinclair Inc. have not yet restored Kimmel’s show to affiliated stations, Vance said that is because “he’s not funny and has terrible ratings. This is not a federal government problem.”
