A leftist American media outlet is promoting a radical Brazilian judge’s efforts to crush free speech both in his own country and abroad.

The Washington Post published an article gleefully describing Alexandre de Moraes in the headline as “The judge who refuses to bend to Trump’s will,” alongside the subheadline: “Alexandre de Moraes says he’s preserving Brazilian democracy.” The judge touted his efforts in comments to The Post. But the reality is that Moraes is pressuring American and Canadian social media companies to crush free speech.

As former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro faces trial next month, Moraes alleged that Bolsonaro broke a ban on use of social media. “The court will not allow the defendant to make a fool of it,” Moraes opined, placing Bolsonaro under house arrest, according to The Post.

The outlet enthused, “As a young prosecutor, he took on São Paulo city hall in a far-reaching corruption probe. As a justice on Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court, he has clashed with Bolsonaro, Musk and other luminaries of the global right. Now his opponent is none other than the president of the United States.”

The Post justified Moraes’s political persecution by accusing Bolsonaro of being “an unabashed apologist for the country’s former military dictatorship.” Thanks to Bolsonaro, The Post hysterically accused, “Misinformation, threats and calls to disband the court were suddenly flourishing on social media.”

Enter Moraes, a dictator masquerading as a champion of freedom. “I understand for an American culture it’s more difficult to understand the fragility of democracy because there’s never been a coup there,” Moraes lectured The Post. “When you’re much more attacked by a disease, you form tougher antibodies, and you seek out a preventive vaccine.” The vaccine, according to him, is excessive censorship. He even banned X and Rumble from operating in Brazil.

The Trump administration sanctioned Brazil and raised tariffs on the country to protest Moraes’s censorship campaign.

Donald Trump bashed the Brazilian government for attacking “the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans” when he imposed the 50 percent tariff in July. That same month, Rumble and Truth Social took Moraes to court in Florida for a second time, as he attempted to coerce the companies into censoring Brazilian dissidents— something they refuse to do.
