New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused social media platforms of being “seas of racism” and implied that online free speech dangerously leads to criminal activity.

While discussing a “public safety plan” last week, Carney accused American Big Tech companies like X of allowing their platforms to be used by hateful criminals.“Online platforms have become seas of racism, misogyny, antisemitism, Islamophobia and hate in all its forms. and their being used by criminals to harm our children,” Carney droned. He went on to promise, “my government will act and today we're announcing our plan to fight crime, to protect Canadians and to build communities that are safe, secure and strong.”

MRC Free Speech America Director Michael Morris blasted the Prime Minister for his anti-free speech remarks. “Even with Trudeau out, it appears we are getting more anti-free speech totalitarianism in Canada,” Morris stated. “Carney is using sleight of hand here, a common parlor trick, in an attempt to equate online free speech with potential criminal activity. He used the left’s favorite buzz word ‘hate’ as cover to attack speech on tech platforms while claiming that Canada will prevent crime and protect children.”

While the Prime Minister’s Liberal Party’s new safety plan does not specify actions against Big Tech or its users, it does address online sexual exploitation and it is unclear if Carney plans to add supposed hate speech to the list of online crimes. Currently, “incitement of hatred” is illegal in Canada, meaning Carney could potentially target online “hate” by punishing platforms or users.

These concerns are not unfounded, as Canada has previously used safety as an excuse to suppress free expression. The video platform Rumble already sued the Canadian government over alleged free speech violations this month. The tech company accused government officials of demanding excessive fees for security at a “Rumble Live” event, with the justification that the event could have attracted violence. Authorities later admitted that there was no credible reason to expect rioting.
