House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) is celebrating anti-free speech Meta’s sudden overhaul of its censorship policies and apparatus — and calling on other tech companies to do the same.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced major changes to his platform on Tuesday, including replacing its third-party fact-checking program with something ostensibly less biased and ending embargoes on certain topics of conversation. Jordan celebrated the change as following years of the House Judiciary Committee’s work. “Today’s news from Mark Zuckerberg comes after our committee conducted rigorous oversight to protect the First Amendment,” he told the New York Post. The House Judiciary Chairman even asked anti-free speech Google to “follow the lead of X and Meta in upholding freedom of speech online.”
Among the committee’s key investigations into Meta/Facebook was the platform’s collusion with the FBI back in 2020. According to Zuckerberg himself and the committee’s findings, the FBI worked with Facebook to censor reports of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal before the presidential election. An MRC poll subsequently found that censorship of the scandal swung the election in Joe Biden’s favor.
Jordan told the Post, “Last August, Zuckerberg admitted to our committee that the Biden White House had pressured Facebook to censor Americans.” In announcing the changes at Meta, Zuckerberg again confirmed the Biden administration’s consistent pressure which will end when the incoming presidential administration takes office. “Today is a huge step in the right direction,” Jordan declared.
The House Judiciary chairman urged other Big Tech companies to follow Meta’s example in enacting reforms. “We are pleased to see Meta’s stated commitment to free speech. Social media, AI and other technology companies must resist governments’ censorship pressure and instead work to ensure the open expression of ideas on their platforms,” Jordan stated. “We hope that other Big Tech companies, including Google, follow the lead of X and Meta in upholding freedom of speech online.”
