Tech giant Google, with a track record of censorship and bias in its artificial intelligence, has launched a new tool.

Google touted its new Whisk tool as using images as prompts. While the Dec. 16 promotional video and  accompanying blog advertises Whisk as a “fun,” harmless, “creative” tool, Google’s anti-free speech, woke track record shows that its foundational AI chatbot Gemini is anything but. This year, election-interfering Google blocked its AI chatbot Gemini from replying to a query about the second attempted assassination of then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, just one example of censorship and bias from Google AI products.

Nor is this accidental. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen went on The Free Press’s Honestly podcast with Bari Weiss recently and cautioned that AI is a “censorship machine” by design. And unless the trend of encoding censorship into AI is stopped, as Andreessen said it might be under a Trump administration, AI could turn into “a hyper-Orwellian, you know, China-style social credit system nightmare.”

Earlier this year, for instance, Google’s Gemini came under fire after numerous users reported that it was disproportionately generating images of non-white individuals, including historical inaccuracies such as a black George Washington and a female pope. MRC researchers confirmed at the time that Gemini refused to generate images of white people, but did generate images with racially specific parameters such as Hispanic and Asian.

Nor is Gemini the only biased Google AI product. MRC caught its predecessor Bard praising former Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Nov. 2023 while denigrating Republican Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Bard also censored news with bias, asserting in January that the Hunter Biden laptop scandal had yet to be verified, while going silent when prompted about the Trump-Russia collusion hoax.

Google’s AI Gemini chatbot also suppressed information on economic news, seemingly laying cover for the Biden-Harris administration’s failed policies. In March, MRC Business researchers unveiled how the Google chatbot falsely asserted that personal savings increased under Biden but decreased under Biden’s predecessor (and now successor) Donald Trump.

Will Whisk be as biased and anti-free speech as previous Google AI tools? Time will tell.
