A prominent tech investor and President-elect Donald Trump’s new AI czar have a sobering warning for Americans about artificial intelligence.

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen went on The Free Press’s Honestly podcast hosted by independent journalist Bari Weiss and cautioned that artificial intelligence (AI) was designed to crush free speech. After noting how the censorship machine evolved on social media, Andreessen accused AI designers of “building a censorship machine” from the onset. Andreessen added that “[i]t's 100 percent intentional.” Trump’s AI czar pick David Sacks shared the clip of Andreessen with the comment, “Make Orwell Fiction Again.”

Andreessen further cautioned that AI will be a much bigger player in the field of censorship than even social media in the coming years. “I think AI is going to be the control layer for everything in the future,” he said, predicting this technology will impact everything from healthcare to government and even education.

Indeed, as Sacks observed, AI has produced truly Orwellian responses, such as Google’s Gemini generating images of George Washington as a black man. The AI bias against white people was by design, suggested Andreessen.

“Social media went on this arc that I've described, from like 2013 to today, where it became a censorship machine. AI has gone on a hyper- accelerated version of that arc,” Andreessen emphasized. The wokeness is deliberate, he said, further stating that there are “large sets of people in these companies that determine these policies, and write them down, and encode them into these systems.” Many social media censors were even brought in to continue their work on AI, Andreessen affirmed.

The censorship groups often disguise the true nature of their work by using names like “trust and safety,” Andreessen continued, but in reality they’re just crushing speech. Sometimes there are as many censors as engineers to build the systems. And when it comes to AI, Andreessen lamented, young users already accustomed to “patronizing moral lectures” appear to see no issue with the woke talking points AI spews. But what’s more, tech employees “train AI to lie,” Andreessen argued.

“My concern, and this goes back to the censorship and political control, of AI is, like, 1,000 times more dangerous than censorship and political control of social media, maybe a million times more dangerous,” Andreessen insisted. AI will enter most sectors of society, until it potentially turns into “a hyper-Orwellian, you know, China-style social credit system nightmare.”

Andreessen warned that is it “vitally important that this not happen.”

He concluded by giving a modicum of hope, that the incoming administration could help prevent the default dystopian AI nightmare from taking hold. “My hope is that the culture changes, the case studies — the, you know, all the stuff we already just talked about — but all the stuff this new administration might do. My hope is that this all gets kind of peeled back and thrown out into the sunlight, and people writ-large come to really understand this and people don’t stand for it and this doesn’t happen.”
