Talk about a cycle of insanity. Anti-free speech Facebook censored a report on censorship.
Twitter Files journalist Matt Taibbi took to Twitter on May 10 to expose how Facebook and its parent company Meta censored a Racket News report about censorship. “Facebook, incredibly, is censoring our report on censorship,” Taibbi wrote in a tweet.
Facebook accused Taibbi of so-called “hate speech” for covering the authoritarian censorship of COVID-19 debates online. But Facebook scrambled to reverse the censorship once Taibbi revealed it, and only after an MRC Free Speech America researcher reached out to the platform asking for an explanation for the censorship.
Taibbi included screenshots of his censored post and Facebook’s message, accusing him of violating Facebook’s Community Standards on alleged “hate speech.” After rambling about “harmful stereotypes,” “hate crimes” and “Describing people as inferior,” Facebook incongruously added, “This includes claims about coronavirus (COVID-19).”
It appears that since Racket News’s report, “Report on the Censorship-Industrial Complex: The Top 50 Organizations to Know,” covered COVID-19 censorship, Facebook censored it. Taibbi described the report as, “The citizen's starter kit to understanding the new global information cartel.” He warned that censors see themselves as in a constant state of conflict or war. “The ‘Censorship-Industrial Complex’ is just the Military-Industrial Complex reborn for the ‘hybrid warfare’ age,” he wrote in the report.
As usual, after Facebook was called out, it tried to pass the censorship off as an “error.”
Meta Communications Director Andy Stone tweeted, “Unfortunately, a bug led this post to be mistakenly deleted for a few minutes. When the error was discovered, it was automatically restored.” Or perhaps Facebook was just caught in an absurdity?
It’s hardly the first time Facebook has had to backtrack. For instance, Facebook had to apologize in February 2021 after mistakenly censoring an 81-year-old knitter for hate speech after she posted about a knitted pig. Facebook also backtracked after previously threatening to ad demonetize satire site The Babylon Bee when Snopes mistakenly fact-checked a satire article.
