House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy says the White House’s plans to monitor Elon Musk’s pro-free speech policy changes at Twitter are "offensive." 
Fox News reported Tuesday that McCarthy discussed a number of topics, but particularly emphasized his belief that Republicans "will no longer let government go after people simply because of their political views."
"That is offensive to me," he said. "The government’s going to go after someone who wants to have free speech? What do they have to look at Twitter about? Do they want to go after the American public about whether they can have an opinion on something?"
McCarthy was referencing White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre’s statement that social media platforms have a responsibility to "make sure that when it comes to misinformation, when it comes to the hate that we're seeing, that ... they take action, that they continue to take action.” Jean-Pierre’s comments were reported by Reuters.
"This is something that we're certainly keeping an eye on," she added when asked about Twitter’s role in spreading so-called “misinformation” after Musk’s takeover.
McCarthy’s comments come after Musk said that free speech is essential to the survival of personal liberties.
“This is a battle for the future of civilization,” he tweeted Monday. “If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead.”
He also announced that he plans to release internal files detailing Twitter’s intentional suppression of the 2020 Hunter Biden laptop scandal.
