Facebook fact-checks climate change meme posted by Larry Elder: Facebook imposed a fact-check interstitial on a meme that GOP presidential candidate Larry Elder posted Mar. 20. Elder posted: "(ICYMI) ELDER: Decades of Alarmist Climate Change Forecasts. #ClimateChangeAlarmism." The post included a link to an Op-Ed that Elder wrote about this issue for the Toronto Sun. The post also included a meme with eight Time magazine covers. Four from the 1970s are labeled "Global Cooling," while the other four between 1987 and 2007 are labeled "Global Warming." Facebook’s interstitial covering the meme claimed that it was "False Information." The interstitial linked to a Climate Feedback fact-check titled, “1977 'coming ice age' Time magazine cover is a fake.” However, the article noted that "While a claim of global cooling did appear a couple times in the 1970s in popular media, that did not reflect the understanding of climate scientists at the time." According to Facebook, users fail to click through fact-check interstitials 95% of the time.
