Eventbrite tried to shut down an Independent Women’s Network (IWN) event giving women a voice to defend women-only space: IWN used the event planning platform Eventbrite to help people RSVP for its upcoming “Let Women Speak Austin” event which was “planned to give women the opportunity to share their opinions and lived experiences, and to advocate for women’s rights and sex-based protections,” according to an IWN report. Eventbrite notified IWN that it had removed the event from its platform in an email. “We have determined that your event is not permitted on the Eventbrite platform as it violates our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, specifically our policy on Hateful, Dangerous, or Violent Content and Events,” Eventbrite claimed according to screenshots included in the report. “As a result, your event has been unpublished. Please be aware that severe or repeated violations of our guidelines may result in the suspension or termination of your Eventbrite account.” IWN Austin Chapter Leader, Michelle Evans, however, seemed understandably appalled at the platform’s apparent disregard for free speech and the rights of women. “A simple demand — Let Women Speak — has been intentionally misrepresented by Eventbrite as hate speech,” said Evans. “The idea of adult human females gathering in the public square to openly discuss sex-based rights has been deemed by the ticketing platform to be a danger to society and worthy of cancellation.” The organization wrote a letter to Eventbrite demanding that the platform reinstate the event. “Hear this, Eventbrite: women will not be silenced," the organization wrote in the letter. "The event will go on as scheduled and the crowd of women ready to give a public record of their dissent grows with every retweet about the deplatforming. Your team of ‘Trust and Safety experts’ insults every woman in America by labeling events like these ‘hateful.’ Stop silencing women. Reverse this decision immediately."
