Donald J. Trump

Trump's campaign text-messaging blocked by several major cellular providers: According to reporting by Politico, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all disabled the Trump campaign's ability to send out text messages on the weekend of July 4, 2020 after the campaign launched a test run of its peer-to-peer text messaging platform. The cell providers involved all refused to comment on the incident to Politico, but the media outlet reported that it learned from sources close to the providers that the stoppage was initiated by "third-party administrators they employ to monitor text messaging and protect consumers from spamming." The sources also denied "any partisan intent and [said] they were merely following guidelines conveyed by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association." The trade organization also refused to comment on the incident specifically, but told Politico that generally speaking, "'We expect all senders ... to include clear opt-out language and gain prior consent before sending a text'" in order to minimize spam. The blockage was resolved within five days, according to Politico.
