Facebook Fact Checks Buck Sexton post about Danish mask study: Conservative commentator Buck Sexton shared news on Facebook of a newly published scientific study on the effectiveness of masks in preventing COVID-19. The image he shared contained the following message: "Large scientific study of mask wearing in Denmark finally comes out: Mask wearing basically doesn't do a damn thing. 'Statistically insignificant.' Scientists quoted in the article: 'mask wearing is essential because we say so! SCIENCE!'" Below that message is a preview of nytimes.com article headlined: "Danish Study Questions Use of Masks to Protect Wearers." This post does not contain an actual link to the nytimes.com article or to any discussion of the mask study. Facebook censored this post with a fact check that claimed: "False Information." This fact check linked to an article by healthfeedback.org titled: "Danish face mask study did not show that masks were ineffective at reducing spread of COVID-19; study was underpowered and results were inconclusive." This article takes aim at claims by certain conservative voices who summarized the study on social media, as well as certain headlines. However, while calling out headlines by The Federalist ("Major Study Finds Masks Don't Reduce COVID-19 Infection Rates") and the Washington Examiner ("Face masks 'did not reduce' coronavirus infections with 'statistical significance'"), the author seemed content with the NY Times headline that was in Sexton's censored post: "Danish Study Questions Use of Masks to Protect Wearers." The fact check seems to be lacking in objectivity. Facebook has admitted that applying such a fact check prevents around 95% of people from clicking through to view the article.
