The following article is a supplement to the MRC Report: The Biden Administration Waged War on Free Speech with 57 Censorship Initiatives.
Initiative #51
The Soros Shortcut
Type of Censorship: Partnership
Agencies Involved:
- Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
Summary:
The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) fast-tracked Soros Fund Management’s acquisition of radio behemoth Audacy, which owns the second largest number of broadcast radio stations in the United States. Soros Fund Management is controlled by leftist activist billionaire George Soros, a man who aggressively funds the censorship of his political opponents.Â
Under the FCC’s own regulations, associations with foreign owners — such as Soros Fund Management — must undergo a rigorous application process. However, in September 2024, the five-member FCC approved the acquisition of Audacy in a 3-2 vote without requiring Soros Fund Management to first meet those disclosure rules.
Key Individuals:
- Anna Gomez, FCC Commissioner
- Jessica Rosenworcel, FCC Chair
- Geoffrey Starks, FCC Commissioner
