It’s Episode Eighteen of MRC’s newest video series, CensorTrack with TR. This week we’re talking about another attack on conservative speech — NewsGuard’s rating system, which routinely gives right-wing sites lower credibility ratings than leftist sites.
NewsGuard is a website ratings firm that rates sites on a completely biased scale. MRC’s Free Speech America and Business teams recently conducted a study on NewsGuard’s skewed rating system.
The MRC analysis relied on information from AllSides, which categorizes media sites. AllSides' site contains a chart that groups news outlets based on their “bias.” The site categorizes outlets using the titles “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right,” and “right.” The MRC used this chart to determine what constitutes left-wing versus right-wing sites.
NewsGuard ranked leftist sites an average of 27 points higher than right-wing sites. Socialist site Jacobin (very left) received a 92.5/100 whereas Fox News received only a 66/100.
NewsGuard also had no regard for legitimate fact-checking. They scored The Federalist (right-wing) a mere 12.5/100 due in part to this article which questioned the efficacy of mask-wearing to protect against COVID-19.
NewsGuard’s scoring not only impacted the sites themselves but the affiliated social media pages of each news outlet as well. Poor ratings generally discourage audience attention. The ratings impact potential reach of news outlets and therefore, they area form of online censorship.
What may have been intended to help users understand the credibility and transparency of sites is unfortunately another biased, anti-conservative system to hide right-leaning content.
