Five U.S. senators are pushing to end government and Big Tech collusion to control what Americans read and say.

Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), along with four other Republican senators, introduced the Disclose Government Censorship Act in an effort to expose the federal government’s collusion with Big Tech giants to muzzle conservative speech. The bill, if passed, would require “basic transparency” about the extent to which the government coordinates with social media platforms to “control what [Americans] can say or read,” Hagerty’s senate office announced Thursday.

“The collusion between the Biden Administration and Big Tech that has come to light over the last two years is not only disturbing but inconsistent with the government’s constitutional role in American life,” Hagerty said.

Americans were alerted to federal entities being in constant communication with Twitter executives from the old regime to muzzle and censor Americans. Thanks to The Twitter Files, these tyrannical censorship efforts have become a focal point of lawmakers’ current efforts to combat the mass harm of Big Tech censorship.

“Lawmakers are right to address Big Tech-Big Government collusion to censor Americans. Our first liberties depend on it,” said MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business Director Michael Morris. “But they can’t stop there. Biased, leftist Big Tech companies censor conservatives even in the absence of government pressure, preventing constitutionally-protected speech from flourishing on social media platforms, places many consider to be the modern town square. Lawmakers should continue to also fight for free speech online by reforming Section 230 and putting an end to Big Tech’s thought policing.”

Hagerty first introduced the Disclose Government Censorship Act in July 2021 and was joined by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) who each co-sponsored the bill.

“No government should pressure social media companies into censoring their users’ legal speech,” Rubio said. He added that the bill targets the Biden administration, which Johnson accused of neglecting the First Amendment.

“Time and time again, the Biden Administration and Big Tech have shown they cannot police themselves in protecting Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech,” Johnson said echoing Rubio.
