Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) House Judiciary Committee ripped the mask off the European Union, which has been using Big Tech to censor Americans.

Ahead of a key Congressional hearing, House Judiciary Committee Republicans published a shocking X thread detailing how “Europe has led a successful decade-long campaign to achieve global online narrative control.” The Committee subpoenaed Big Tech companies and received “thousands” of internal documents, revealing that “Big Tech is censoring Americans’ speech in the U.S., including true information, to comply with Europe’s far-reaching Digital Services Act.” The exposé follows a year of contentious debate between European governments and the Trump administration over censorship laws that impact Americans.

The Committee accused the EU of developing “codes” and “forums” as a method of pressuring social media companies to censor certain speech as far back as 2015. While these forums were allegedly voluntary, internal documents from the companies show that they had to comply with the pressure or face government consequences, the Judiciary Committee explained

Over time, the censorship campaign only grew worse. “In more than 90 meetings organized under the Disinformation Code between 2022 and 2024, the Commission pressured platforms to change their global content moderation rules and censor more content,” the Judiciary Committee wrote on X. “And once the DSA was in effect, the Commission warned platforms that they had to undertake ‘continuous review of community guidelines’ to comply.”

The EU reportedly insisted that Big Tech platforms change their community guidelines for posts on topics such as mass migration and biological men in women’s sports. Unfortunately, these rules are “global in scope,” requiring censorship of posts created by Americans as well as Europeans.

In 2023, TikTok cracked down on content critical of transgender ideology after EU pressure. The Committee also shared screenshots showing that TikTok openly admitted its updates to Community Guidelines in 2024 were a result of the DSA. TikTok even acknowledged its censorship of true information in the United States because it is illegal under the European legislation.

Indeed, the Committee noted, leaders of the European Commission specifically focused on crushing American free speech during the COVID-19 pandemic, demanding censorship long before the Digital Services Act (DSA) was codified as European censorship law.

In the 2024 U.S. presidential election cycle, EU Vice President Vera Jourova actually flew out to California to coordinate election censorship with Big Tech representatives. Commissioner Thierry Breton went so far as to threaten X with legal consequences over an interview its owner, Elon Musk, conducted with then-candidate Donald Trump.

Most recently, the EU fined X €140 million for refusing to buckle to extreme censorship and anti-privacy demands.
