College students can now access extremely biased and anti-free speech artificial intelligence at no charge, raising concerns of censorship and information manipulation.

Google bragged in an August press release that it is making its “most advanced AI tools,” including the AI chatbot Gemini, available to universities for free. Google is also providing $1 billion for “AI education and job training programs and research” in the United States. “This includes making our AI and career training free for every college student in America through our AI for Education Accelerator,” the tech giant boasted. But Google’s AI is infamous for its woke bias and censorship features.

While Google has long been meddling in education, including by providing Chromebooks to classrooms, its AI can bring a whole new set of problems. The Google press release, in fact, specifically boasted that it will be making its Gemini AI available for homework and writing assistance. Gemini’s new Guided Learning feature supposedly helps students navigate research and build their skills. But MRC repeatedly exposed Gemini’s bias.

Other AI provided by Google to students includes Veo 3, NotebookLM and Deep Research, according to the press release.

Despite the hype, Google’s AI has severe flaws. For example, just before Independence Day, Gemini told the Media Research Center that the patriotic holiday and the Pledge of Allegiance could be “offensive” to some people. Additionally, in June, MRC exposed Gemini for claiming a man can become a woman, which is biologically impossible, while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital.

In December 2023, anti-free speech Google added “toxicity” evaluations to Gemini, tending toward biased censorship. This month, MRC released research showing Gemini, Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT all suggested President Donald Trump should not uphold the tradition of opening the 2028 Olympics as the leader of the host country.
