As anti-free speech Big Tech focuses on developing artificial intelligence, free speech advocates need an AI alternative — and one might be available soon.
Rumble, which has been in multiple high-profile cases battling censorship this year, announced on August 10 that it is looking to acquire German AI company Northern Data. The video and cloud services company aims to “create a leading force in freedom-first infrastructure supported by Rumble’s existing balance sheet,” and perhaps provide an alternative to the bias and censorship of current popular AI models.
If it were to acquire Northern Data, Rumble said it would prioritize independence, data privacy and AI leadership. “Rumble has notified Northern Data of its interest in a potential all-stock exchange offer for 100% of the outstanding shares of Northern Data,” the platform noted in its announcement.
This could be a game-changing deal, as Rumble has consistently held steadfast to free speech policies even when foreign governments have made it incredibly difficult to do so. For instance, Rumble has been fighting the Brazilian government in more than one court case in Florida this year as it refuses to censor Brazilian dissidents. Similarly, in April, Rumble and Rebel News sued the Canadian government for efforts to suppress free speech online and at events.
By contrast, the current major AI models from companies like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and xAI consistently demonstrate leftist bias and anti-free speech tendencies. For example, last Thursday, an MRC study revealed Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT all suggested Donald Trump should not uphold the tradition of opening the 2028 Olympics as the leader of the host country.
Furthermore, just before Independence Day, Gemini claimed that the patriotic holiday and the Pledge of Allegiance could be “offensive” to some people. And in May, both before and after the papal conclave, MRC found MetaAI, Gemini, Co-Pilot, ChatGPT, Grok and Chinese DeepSeek all displaying woke bias in analyzing papal candidates and the newly elected pope, Leo XIV.
