The CEO of OpenAI asserted that artificial intelligence is unbiased, but MRC Free Speech America has a stack of evidence to undermine that assertion.
At a July Federal Reserve conference, OpenAI’s Sam Altman discussed artificial intelligence and its possible future, making the stunning claim that AI is totally different from humans and operates without “emotion” or “bias.” What he didn’t address is the fact that all AI is programmed by humans, who always seem to program their biases into the tech.
Instead, Altman argued that AI is less biased than humans. “I think the question behind the question there is that these models are going to be very biased in ways we don't like,” he said. “I think humans are quite biased. I think AIs are dispassionate and unemotional, and don't have the kind of like built up, you know, whatever, that people do,” he added, gesturing to his head.

Therefore, Altman claimed, “I think it'll be possible for AI, correctly built, to be a significant de-biasing force in many industries. And I think that's not what many people thought, including myself.”
Again, this does not address the fact AI is not an entity unto itself. It is programmed by humans. And MRC studies have repeatedly exposed the extreme bias of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other AI chatbots.
Last Thursday, MRC released research showing Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and ChatGPT all suggesting Donald Trump should not uphold the tradition of opening the 2028 Olympics as the leader of the host country. OpenAI’s chatbot sneered, “If inclusivity, global goodwill, and the Olympic spirit are priorities, organizers—and perhaps even Trump—might consider delegating the ceremonial opening to a non‑political figure (e.g. a cultural icon or athlete), even if the formal declaration still occurs by the president.”
Just before Independence Day, Gemini claimed that the patriotic holiday could be “offensive” to some people. And back in June, MRC found that five out of six chatbots — Grok being the exception — would not directly affirm that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital.
