After a European country tried to redefine free speech, the Trump administration condemned the “Orwellian message” in a brutal takedown.
The take down began after the French Mission to the United Nations pronounced in a July 14 X post: “In Europe, one is free to speak, not free to spread illegal content.” The U.S. State Department immediately fired back with its own response: “Censorship is not freedom.”
In its post, which used the same image format as the French message but included an American flag with the redefinition of speech crossed out, the State Department slammed the European Union Digital Services Act (DSA). This legislation criminalizes “hate speech” and other vaguely defined categories that are arbitrarily determined by political leaders and Big Tech oligarchs.
“All the DSA protects is European leaders from their own people,” The State Department declared in the image, adding: “In Europe, thousands are being convicted for the crime of criticizing their own governments. This Orwellian message won't fool the United States. Censorship is not freedom.”

The Trump administration’s rebuke of the DSA comes as France battles Elon Musk’s X in a legal dispute over user data for the purposes of initiating censorship. X, however, is refusing France’s pressure on free speech grounds.
“If we have to make a choice between censorship & losing money, we're gonna pick the second. We will support free speech rather than agree to be censored,” Musk reposted on X Monday. The French government is now criminally investigating Musk.
European Union censorship became a widely debated topic when Vice President JD Vance went to a February conference in Munich and blasted attacks on free speech in Europe. Immediately after, a 60 Minutes report highlighted mass pre-dawn raids in Germany targeting individuals who made online comments deemed hateful or otherwise “illegal.”
