Free speech advocates are hailing Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s move to ban visas for foreign nationals implicated in censorship as a major step toward protecting freedom of speech worldwide.

Rubio announced the visa restrictions Wednesday on X, accusing foreign authorities of fining, harassing and charging Americans for “exercising their free speech rights.” Multiple free speech advocates and organizations—including Catholic Vote, House Judiciary GOP and The Blaze—took to X to express their praise and support for the new policy, which Dr. Simone Gold described as “the dawn of a new era” for freedom of speech worldwide.

The House Judiciary GOP account labeled Rubio’s policy as “Excellent news!” while adding:  “We’ve been exposing foreign censorship efforts over the past year.

Now, those who want to silence your speech are being held accountable.”

Meanwhile, Catholic Vote celebrated the news with an applause emoji and the description of Rubio’s actions as “Respect for our God-given right to free speech.”

Likewise, Tea Party Patriots Co-Founder Jenny Beth Martin posted, “It’s about time we defend our rights. Free speech isn’t negotiable. Not now. Not ever.”

In a similar vein, Dr. Gold, founder of America’s Frontline Doctors, described Rubio’s new policy as “a bold stand for global liberty.” She enthusiastically predicted, “This marks the dawn of a new era — where free speech is not just an American right, but a global principle. Let this be the first step in restoring truth and liberty across the world.”

There were multiple outlets quick to react to the news, for instance, Reclaim The Net, which praised, “Rubio Leads Crackdown on Foreign Censors with Visa Bans.” The Blaze excitedly posted its announcement in all caps: “RUBIO ANNOUNCES VISA RESTRICTIONS ON FOREIGN NATIONALS WHO HAVE TRIED TO CENSOR AMERICAN CITIZEN.”

Free Speech Union Director Toby Young provided more details, declaring, “Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, has said that not only will he deny visas to officials of foreign states engaged in censorship of American social media platforms, but to their ‘immediate family members’ as well.”

Among those who lauded the new policy were free speech advocates from other countries. For instance, Israeli author Tomer Rozenberg insisted, “Rubio's visa ban on foreign censors is a bold step to protect American free speech, setting a global standard for liberty.”
