Former Biden Disinformation Governance Board czar Nina Jankowicz is undermining America and free speech principles abroad.

As the European Union (EU) steps up the pressure on American Big Tech companies to censor and fact check free speech online, would-be Minister of Truth Jankowicz arrived to testify Tuesday before the EU Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield on supposed Russian disinformation and cyberattacks. According to Jankowicz, who once named herself the “Mary Poppins of Disinformation,” the EU should be focusing on defying not only Russia, but also the United States, because the Trump administration—“an autocracy,” she claimed—is gutting the federal censorship industry. “Hold the line,” she hysterically urged the EU, bashing the Trump administration for shuttering government censorship agencies and protecting free speech.

After criticizing autocratic regimes like China and Iran, Jankewitz shockingly transitioned immediately to arguing that fighting autocracy and defending democracy demands a censorship industry, replete with researchers, journalists and government officials to fact check and ultimately pressure Big Tech to censor online speech. She claimed efforts to dismantle these anti-free speech efforts “hobbled some democracies’ responses to the strategic threat” of Russia.

Jankowicz whined, “Just last week in the United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio gleefully announced he was obliterating the office tasked with tracking and responding to foreign information manipulation and interference. Many other U.S. government institutions have been similarly dismantled in the months since President Trump took office, all under the guise of protecting free speech and allegedly ‘ending censorship.’”

The specific agency she referenced is the infamous Global Engagement Center, which funded and furthered online censorship under the Biden administration. For example, as detailed in MRC’s exposé of 57 Biden censorship initiatives, GEC spearheaded an effort to bring sovereign governments together to fund censorship entities, including biased ratings firm NewsGuard, and pressure tech companies.

Continuing, Jankowicz mourned, “Now the European Union has become the subject of the Trump administration and tech executives’ ire as it dares to implemate, implement the legislation that you, its duly elected representatives, drafted, debated and passed on behalf of your constituents.”

But Jankowicz is wrong as wrong can be here. Back in 2020, a majority of EU citizens opposed transnational censorship policies, according to a YouGov opinion poll. Yet Jankowicz quickly moved on to claim without evidence that somehow under the Trump administration, which is actively fighting to end the monopoly power of Big Tech companies on multiple fronts (i.e. Google and Meta), “the United States has now become the largest lobbyist for these multibillion dollar corporations and is harassing any nation or body that aims to conduct oversight or require transparency of them.” She repeated the tired accusation that rejecting censorship harms democracy. Yet even one of the worst censors of them all, Google, is now resisting implementation of EU fact-checking rules.

Jankowicz shockingly compared the Trump administration to the world‘s biggest autocracies because of its free speech stance: “I would like to call upon you to stand firm against another autocracy, the United States of America. The Trump administration is undoubtedly preparing a pressure campaign to force EU institutions to roll back regulation like the DSA, to end support for Ukraine, to stop holding Russia to account.”

The “DSA” or Digital Services Act is censorship legislation, which passed in the EU, that targets alleged disinformation and “online harms.” Jankowicz urged the EU Parliament to oppose Trump. “Do not capitulate,” she said. “Hold the line. Doing so is the clearest signal the European Union could send to Russia and other adversaries that it will not stop fighting to preserve democracy at home and around the world.”
