Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) was eviscerated online after she stated her explicit goal of trampling free speech.

Pressley, who appears to struggle with basic English, said, “I’ll take a bit of umbrage here, I’ll speak on behalf of my colleagues, I think I can say we are all willing to work with anyone who’s serious about doing the work of censoring the American people and advancing progress.” This blatant rejection of the First Amendment caused multiple free speech advocates to take to the internet to bash the stunning statement.

Libs of TikTok noted that the congresswoman said the quiet part out loud. “Ayanna Pressley openly admits she’s willing to work with anyone who wants to CENSOR Americans. They aren’t even hiding it anymore—free speech is the enemy to the radical left,” the popular account posted.

Twitchy’s Warren Squire had a similar take, as he wrote, “Democrats love trampling on Americans’ rights of free speech and freedom of the press so Pressley is speaking the truth here.”

The Babylon Bee’s non-satire sister site Not the Bee seemed more shocked. “Ayanna Pressley really just said she will work with anyone who's serious about ‘censoring the American people’ 😬,” Not the Bee posted. In its article, the news outlet sarcastically added, “Hey Facebook, Google, TikTok, listen up, Ayanna Pressley has an important message for you.”

New York Post journalist Miranda Devine pointed out just how bizarre Pressley’s statement was even when put in the context of her speech about the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. “Huh? Did Rep. Ayanna Pressley misspeak?” Devine wrote.

Many are left asking the same question: what exactly did Pressley mean by her Orwellian statement? The answer is unclear even after Presley’s team altered the transcript of her speech on her website, changing the words “censoring the American people” to “centering the American people.” Regardless, if it was a slip, it seems it was an honest one.

Indeed, this was not Pressley’s first time advocating for censorship. In February 2021, she warned Twitter and “any other platform that amplifies & spreads misinformation puts the safety of our families and our teams at risk” with vague consequences for not silencing speech. She advocated in 2024 for legislation to “combat disinformation,” a leftist catchphrase that often refers to censoring speech with which they disagree.
