Anti-free speech Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has resigned, and free speech advocates are thrilled.
Multiple political and media figures took to social media to celebrate Trudeau’s resignation and slam his record of urging Big Tech to increase online censorship. Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger shared a thread detailing Trudeau’s egregious rights violations, including his legislative push to silence speech. Meanwhile, legal analyst Jonathan Turley called Trudeau’s administration “one of the most anti-free speech” in Canadian history, and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene accused Trudeau of “destroying free speech.”

Shellenberger bashed Trudeau, arguing he “falsely smeared his critics as Nazis. He justified freezing financial accounts using faked intelligence. And he spread disinformation while demanding censorship.” Trudeau froze COVID-19 lockdown trucker protestors’ monetary accounts. Trudeau asserted the accounts had to be frozen because it was an “emergency,” but “[i]t wasn’t.” The PM’s administration “used faked intelligence to illegally frame protesting truckers as violent extremists,” Shellenberger accused.
The former Canadian leader also touted legislation that mandated a harsh crackdown on free speech.
Shellenberger added, “Trudeau claimed a new ‘hate speech’ law was required to protect children. It wasn't. Harming children was already illegal.” The term “hate speech” is often applied by leftists to opinions with which they disagree to justify censorship. Shellenberger cited the resigning Prime Minister’s response to his publication, “Trudeau's government confirmed to Public that the law would allow judges to send people to prison for speech crimes — for life.” Shellenberger added the damning argument that Trudeau helped “to create a fake hate panic in order to censor, interfere in elections, and incarcerate their critics.”
In a similar vein, Turley shared a January 2024 article he wrote on a court ruling against Trudeau for the trucker crackdown, and declared, “Trudeau just resigned. It is not just the economy that has been devastated under his watch and that of the Liberal Party. With him, one of the most anti-free speech Canadian administrations will come to an end.”
Greene, however, humorously attributed Trudeau’s resignation to months of trolling and mockery from the Prime Minister’s U.S. counterpart, President-elect Donald Trump, who referred to Canada as the “51st state” and threatened Trudeau and Canada with high tariffs. “After tyrannical Covid abuse, destroying free speech, [and] importing military aged male ‘refugees’ … Trudeau RESIGNS!” she posted.
