Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) took to Fox Business to slam Google for its political “preferencing that they do in the search engine.” She based her remarks on Media Research Center’s new study on Google’s search bias against Republican candidates in top senate races.
Sen. Blackburn appeared on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria and discussed MRC Free Speech America’s new Google search bias study with host Maria Bartiromo. Bartiromo cited the study showing that Google’s search algorithms “favored Democrat candidates” in ten out of twelve major Senate races, when compared with competitor search engines Bing and DuckDuckGo using the same parameters.
“Google is now facing accusations of manipulating search results,” Bartiromo stated. “The Media Research Center says that ten out of twelve Republican campaign websites received significantly lower search results compared to Democrat opponents.” Blackburn didn’t mince words. “This is something that appears to be intentional and purposeful,” Blackburn agreed. “Are they doing this as an in-kind contribution to the Democratic campaigns?”
“The watchdog also shows results are completely different when compared to search engines such as Bing or DuckDuckGo,” Bartiromo added. The senator agreed, condemning Google’s “preferencing” of Democrat Senate candidates over Republicans. The research is especially significant as MRC previously found that Big Tech suppression and censorship helped steal the 2020 election for Joe Biden. MRC’s latest research is especially damning in light of new developments regarding Google allegedly sending millions of Republican National Committee emails into spam.
Bartiromo pointed to the fact that the RNC said all its “get out the vote” emails were sent to spam folders by Google’s Gmail.
The Republican conference has met with Google and another “major mail vendor” about the spam bias, Blackburn continued. Google’s answers were “not satisfactory,” Blackburn said, and cited the example of apparent suppression of emails from Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) campaign.
“You have to look at how Big Tech is using their power, just as they did in 2020, to help to manipulate the results,” Blackburn said.
After she praised the RNC’s lawsuit of Google regarding the Gmail bias, Blackburn turned to MRC’s new study on Google’s search algorithm bias. “[Google] will preference a Democrat or a negative story, and they will suppress the ability to connect with a campaign website,” Blackburn noted, based on MRC’s recent study.
