Google will once again allow Zero Hedge, a financial website, to run ads after the site removed “derogatory” comments the tech giant took issue with.
Google removed the site’s ability to run Google ads in June. In a recent review of the site, Google determined that the offensive comments were removed. Zero Hedge has since implemented content moderation.
“We work with publishers to keep them aware of our monetization policies, which cover user comments on sites, and offer guidance on how to address policy violations if they wish to be reinstated,” a Google spokesperson said at the time. “We have policies like these for many reasons, including to ensure companies advertising with us have confidence their ads aren’t running against dangerous, derogatory or hateful content.”
Google also warned The Federalist about the “dangerous” content in its comments section adding that if the comments persisted, Google would remove the publication from its ads platform. The Federalist has since deleted its comments section.
Federalist co-founder Sean Davis said Google’s response was a “pretty terrifying example of the power that you have of the unholy union of corrupt media and monopolistic tech oligarchs.”
